DISCODROID 3000

‘Disco Droid 300’ is a love letter to the iconic High Energy movement, that occur in Mexico in the late 1970’s, early 1980’s. Students from Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Estado de México, collaborated with renowned artists and designers such as Gabriel Lopez (Sonido Gallo Negro, Obsene), Aldo Cañedo and Mar Nahimira (Fragments and Forms), Eric Perez Segura, Phil Baglatas, and José de la O (delaO Design Studio), they have crafted a fully functional digital musical instruments that generate melodies inspired by the distinctive style of High Energy.

Drawing inspiration from the futuristic aesthetic of Jaime Ruelas, these cutting-edge artifacts empower the performer, Gabriel Lopez, to create unique and unparalleled compositions, paying a true tribute to this influential musical and visual movement.

VOULEZ-VOUS

‘Voulez-Vous’ is a drum synthesizer in the high energy movement.

It seeks to be an instrument for real-time improvisation of Hi-NRG music with the help of microcontrollers and Arduino Leonardo.

 

DANCING QUEEN

Fabián Iniesta, Itzel Gálvez and Luz Zavala

‘Dancing Queen’ is a midi clock that synchronizes and controls the rest of the instruments that make up "Discodroid 3000". A series of synthesizers whose aesthetics and sound are based on the Hi-Nrg musical movement.

Its shape is based on the pentagon and a control pillar of a spaceship. The project was done with the help of the Bela controller and Arduino, generating a series of completely random notes to generate the music.

 

I FEEL LOVE

Lorena Zayas and Nimbe Ruiz

Lead synthesizer from a family of products that are part of the HI-NRG movement, a style of music that had its heyday between the 70s and 80s.

The ‘I Feel Love’ lead synth is responsible for generating the main melody of a HI-NRG song and is mainly inspired by spatial elements that are highly symbolic on HI-NRG posters of the time.

 

HOTTEST OF THE HOT

Vanessa Rosas, Daniela Pazarán and Roxana Gómez

‘Hottest of the Hot’ is a detachable musical artifact from the Disco Droid 3000 family. It is in charge of the musical accompaniments and inspired by the Egyptian figures found in the High NRG posters.

It is made of 9 and 15mm MDF with an automotive finish and anodized aluminum plates.

 

LET IT WHIP

'Let it whip' is a bass synth inspired by the High Energy social movement of the 80s.

For the design, user interaction was prioritized since being something so sensitive for musical composition, it needs to be comfortable and accessible.

‘Love Reaction’ is a series of 3 interconnected luminaires and controlled with TouchDesigner for the scenario of "DiscoDroid 3000".
